Paula Rego, Secrets & Stories offers a unique and personal portrait of one of the most significant figurative artists of our time. Through personal stories, archive footage and conversations with her son, the film shows how Rego’s art intertwines the private and the political, and how she used stories and fairy tales, historical events and personal experiences to challenge power structures, gender roles and society’s blind spots.
Paula Rego (1935–2022) was born in Lisbon during António Salazar's fascist regime, a society characterised by censorship, strict social control and clear restrictions on women’s lives and rights. The experience ofgrowing up in a society marked by control and oppression became a recurring theme in her art.
When she moved to London to study at the Slade School of Fine Art, she encountered a freer art scene that allowed for an increasingly personal and uncompromising form of expression. After her international breakthrough in 1988 Rego established herself as one of Europe’s most significant figurative artists, known for her unsettling, narrative compositions and her sharp insight into power, gender and society’s hiddenstructures.
The film is being screened in relation to the exhibition Paula Rego – A Dance Among Thorns at MUNCH.
