An enveloping soundscape resonates with Munch's paintings that cover the exhibition's largest wall.
Marie Ulven, better known as girl in red, has composed Norwegian Summer especially for this exhibition. She was inspired by a selection of Munch paintings that appear, perhaps uncharacteristically, light and joyous ease. Her soundscape enters into a dialogue with the paintings and opens up new entrypoints into Munch's artistic universe. Reflecting on the creative process, Marie writes:
“When I sat down with the selection of paintings and started making the music, I wanted to expand the spaces within them. I thought about all the people in each image. I thought of their longing, desire, joy, loss and sadness. I thought about the tension that exists on a summer night. The feeling that anything could happen, and the crushing disappointment when things do not turn out as hoped. Because even the brightest Norwegian summer holds a shadow of darkness.”

The exhibition is curated in collaboration with Trine Otte Bak Nielsen (Senior Curator, MUNCH).
The exhibition has been realised in collaboration with: Marie Ulven Ringheim, Isak Jenssen and TWENTY TEN MANAGEMENT by Ben Blackburn.
Developed in close collaboration with girl in red, MUNCH presents a dynamic programme that unfolds both within and beyond the exhibition space. Visitors are invited to discover new ways into the exhibition and Marie Ulven's practice. Further details will be announced soon.
