An ambient jazz tribute to Norway’s breathtaking winter landscape, with our current dark times as the backdrop.

Daniel Herskedal’s groundbreaking Call For Winter project has become a central feature of his career. A one-man mission where he composes and records everything himself, isolated in a mountain cabin – a tribute to Norway’s beautiful winter landscape, but with the current dark times as the backdrop.

To date, the composer and brass player has performed Call for Winter at nearly 60 concerts in 14 different countries, mostly in surround sound. Surround sound and soundscapes will also feature at MUNCH, where he will unveil the world premiere of Call For Winter III – the triloigy’s third and final instalment.

The first album won the Spellemann Prize in the TONO Composer Award category, and CFW has led to collaborations with film makers such as Paolo Sorrentino, theatre and dance productions, and releases with artists including Emilie Nicolas, Marja Mortensson and Keaton Henson.

Herskedal composes this music alone in the mountains, cut off from the outside world. It is there that he finds the intense tranquillity and depth in the music that the project demands – emotions that cannot be conveyed in words. Using brass instruments as his tools, his musical inspiration ranges from the Armenian duduk, church organ, choirs, string orchestras, Southern Sami joik and Arabic vocals.

Herskedal’s ability to coax a wide array of effects from just the tuba and bass trumpet is nothing short of extraordinary. Call for Winter is a profound statement of vision and virtuosity, inviting listeners to experience a deep emotional and atmospheric journey.
