Paula Rego: Dance among thorns

To celebrate Portugal’s national day on 10 June, chamber ensemble Alma Lusitana present a recital of Portuguese music and readings. The programme is curated as a musical journey through many of the themes in the exhibition Paula Rego: Dance among thorns, including New Beginnings, the Abortion series, Childhood memories, Possession, The Magic of Fairytales, and moments in Portugal’s history.

The artist herself was passionate about music, including Portuguese fado, opera, and the Disney film Fantasia (1940), where classical works were paired with animated cartoons. Tonight’s programme includes oboist João Miguel Silva’s special arrangements of traditional fado tunes, as well as a selection of beautiful, melancholy, evocative music by composers from Portugal, Norway and Italy.

The concert will be accompanied by slides of Rego’s artworks relevant to the music.
