Edvard MunchConnect the Lines

Art can connect places and people across time. This interactive exhibition invites you to explore connections with Edvard Munch’s roughly 7,000 drawings from the MUNCH museum archive. These works are extremely sensitive and fragile, which is why they must rest most of the time, hidden from public view.
Now, we invite you to use your creativity to explore Munch’s drawings in our digital archive. As you draw on a tablet, the system uses artificial intelligence (AI) to find a Munch drawing that resembles yours – helping you connect with thousands of works that have so far remained largely protected in the museum’s archives.
Connect the Lines also presents a selection of original drawings by Munch, ranging from grotesque caricatures and charming dog sketches to depictions of human skin, as well as a fascinating cartoonish exploration of the world of Peer Gynt. Together, these works reveal strange, humorous, and unexpected sides of Munch as an artist.
The exhibition builds on the research and innovation project ‘New Snow’, developed through MUNCH Lab. It forms part of the museum’s ambition to explore new ways of making Munch’s art accessible and engaging.
The AI system that connects visitors’ drawings with Munch’s works has been developed through a research collaboration with the technology company Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). The digitisation of Munch’s drawings has been made possible with support from the Bergesen Foundation.
