Extra Large Unit’s What just happened? is the result of Paal Nilssen-Love’s exploration of what a concert is – and when it begins. Is it when you enter the venue? When the band goes on stage? When the first notes hit the air? Or did it start the moment you read about it and decided to go?
Nilssen-Love is a powerhouse in jazz and improvisation, known for his electrifying drumming, bold compositions and commanding stage presence. Whether performing solo or as part of a large ensemble, he never fails to captivate his audience.
From the start of his career, he has been drawn to the ensemble format, playing with mentors such as Frode Gjerstad, Didrik Ingvaldsen, and notably Peter Brötzmann.
With Large Unit, Nilssen-Love stepped forward as bandleader, creating a space where young musicians are invited into a dynamic and exploratory collective. In the new piece What just happened?, the ensemble expands into Extra Large Unit, featuring 25 musicians on stage alongside dancers from Cattleya Dance Company.
The project includes newly graduated musicians from institutions including Sund Folk High School, The Grieg Academy, and The Norwegian Academy of Music. Together, they dive into free improvisation and sonic exploration. The music combines chaos and brutality with delicacy and rawness, using structures that give each composition a distinct identity.
The project is supported by Arts Council Norway and Norsk Musikkfond.
Jazz at MUNCH is a concert series with roots going back to the 1960s, programmed in collaboration with Oslo Jazzfestival.
