Ludvig Karsten (1876–1926) moved to Paris in 1900 and stayed there for several periods. The early years up to 1906 were particularly decisive for his artistic career.

Karsten was known for his sharp tongue, but also for his extensive network of contacts in France and Europe. He was active in the Paris art scene and had contact with key figures who later became important names in art history. Karsten's position in relation to French modern art and the Paris art scene has been little researched to date.

In this talk, art historian Vibeke Röstorp and curator of the exhibition Ludvig Karsten – Restless, Signe Endresen, meet to discuss the impact that the art scene and his stays in Paris had on Karsten's art.

Vibeke Röstorp is an independant art historian with a PhD from the Sorbonne University in Paris. Based in Paris and Stockholm, she specialises in Nordic art and artistic exchanges between France and Scandinavia in the decades around 1900, particularly on the Parisian art scene. Röstorp is the author of several books, including Le Mythe du retour: les artistes scandinaves en France de 1889 à 1908 (2013), Anders Zorn och Frankrike (2017), and Oskar Bergman: a life in Nature (2021).

Signe Endresen is Senior Curator at MUNCH. She has a PhD in art history from the University of Oslo (2015). She specialises in Norwegian and European modern art. Endresen is the curator of the exhibition Ludvig Karsten – Restless.
