This is MUNCH

MUNCH is more than just a museum – it’s a dynamic meeting place for art and experiences.

No one leaves MUNCH unmoved. That’s our promise to you. At MUNCH, you’ll experience the full breadth of Edvard Munch’s artistry, alongside contemporary art and world-class international exhibitions. We also offer a vibrant programme of music, performances, talks, and activities for children and young people.

Located in Bjørvika, MUNCH is purpose-built for grand artistic experiences. Here, you can encounter more of Edvard Munch’s work than ever before – in entirely new ways. Across 13 floors, you’ll find not only Munch, but also contemporary art, modernism, performance, and live music, with something for everyone – children, teens, and adults alike.

MUNCH is a place for all. We aim to expand the idea of what a museum can be and to open up new perspectives and experiences.

13 floors of experiences

– Whether we are working with well-known or emerging, historical or contemporary artists, MUNCH remains relevant by addressing the most pressing questions of our time. In this way, we are a museum for living people who breathe and feel, suffer and love – no matter who they are or where they come from, says Director Tone Hansen.

Edvard MUNCH AND MORE

MUNCH features 11 galleries offering varied approaches to Edvard Munch’s life and art, alongside a rich programme of changing exhibitions featuring Norwegian and international contemporary and modernist artists.

At the heart of it all is Edvard Munch. MUNCH houses the world’s largest collection of his work, with five collection-based exhibitions showcasing iconic pieces such as The Scream, Madonna, The Sun and more.

Alongside Munch and the modernists, contemporary art holds a prominent place in our new building, opened in 2021.

We curate a wide range of exhibitions – from major names to new and exciting talent, including our SOLO OSLO series, which highlights emerging local artists.

– At MUNCH, we are committed to developing important and innovative exhibitions, events, research, publications, and digital content – along with a variety of other experiences for a wide local and international audience. There will always be something new to discover at MUNCH, says Director Tone Hansen.
