Munch’s drawings

MUNCH’s collection contains over 7,000 drawings by Edvard Munch.
These fragile works are rarely exhibited, yet they reveal new and surprising aspects of Munch’s art – from humorous caricatures and grotesque details to spontaneous sketches. Now, we invite you to engage in a dialogue with Munch’s drawings through your own creativity.
As you draw your own lines, the system uses artificial intelligence (AI) to find a Munch drawing that resembles yours, helping you to discover and explore thousands of works that have so far remained largely hidden in the museum’s archives.
The exhibition builds on the research and development project Nysnø, which has appeared in various forms as part of MUNCH Lab. It forms part of the museum’s ambition to explore new ways of making the collection accessible and finding fresh ways for audiences to engage with Munch’s art.
The system that uses AI to connect visitors’ drawings with Edvard Munch’s works has been developed through a research collaboration with the technology company Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). The digitisation of Munch’s drawings has been made possible with support from the Bergesen Foundation.
