Discover Ludvig Karsten
With this catalogue MUNCH highlights the breadth of this original artistic output and invite you to see Karsten’s restless artistic practice with fresh eyes.
Ludvig Karsten (1876–1926) was a rebellious painter and an impulsive individualist who used bold colours and expressive brushstrokes. Not least, he was a stylistic chameleon who enjoyed great recognition in his time, but his frequent changes of style have also made it difficult to place him within art history. Since his death, he has therefore received relatively little attention.
The catalogue contains a poem by Pedro Carmona- Alvarez, which connects Karsten’s work to our time by drawing parallels to today’s refugee situation, and art historical texts by Luisa Aubert, Ellen Egemose, Signe Endresen, MaryClaire Pappas and Vibeke Röstorp. Together they offer a range of new perspectives on a rich artistic career in constant motion.
